From what I understand, because grunge singers sing with a very closed mouth they add an R sound to create the correct mouth shape/tongue position for the particular sound they're trying to create. The Fairy Voice Mother did a great breakdown of it and is the only person I've heard explain it in a way that makes sense to me.

the reason grunge is great is because every song on every album sounds different. You have heaviness and beautiful melody along with great lyrics.Love every members contribution in this band.Jerry's riffs just grab you and don't let go and then you have Layne's voice which is mesmerizing!

Clenching your jaw in frustration, lifting your tongue to the front of the hard palette (maybe to one side too) while singing the word "could" imo causes the 'r' sound in grunge

I am awestruck by the way their voices interact so beautifully. Neither one is competitive or overpowering. It's as if their voices are engaged in an intricately choreographed tango, eyes and arms locked, seductively dancing with one another. I'd recommend How to be Me(Ren & Chinchilla) and her Littlr Girl Gone, Fingers or 1.5. Ren's Tale of Jenny and Screech is cery different.

I don't love being quite old, but I can say I saw Layne Staley and Mark Lanegan perform on the same night, Screaming Trees opening for Alice in Chains. At least one of the band members had to run off to vomit at some point (it was at a Dutch venue, apparently he couldn't handle the weed), but it was legendary. Mark Lanegan was one of those grunge/rock singers who did have a low voice.

I remember she never did the 'tudududu' when performing Zombie live. The Cranberries songs have a lot of 'lalalala' (Waltzing Back, Pretty, Dreams, Liar, Desperate Andy, Ridiculous Thoughts, Picture I view, The Rebels) and 'tudududu' ( Disappointment, I Can't Be With You, Promises, Ode To My Family, Never Grow Old)

I think this performance was ecen more impactful than the video. The video version was absolutely stunning...his voice, the visuals, the feelings conveyed...all of it. But this? This somehow was even more emotional. What a testament to his talent that he gave this performance with a dangerously high fever.

Layne had an almost ethereal ability to instantly haunt a person's soul connecting every emotion. He made you FEEL the lyrics so deeply. Check out the MTV live of Down in a hole. Ugh. And, for me, Dont Follow is something to experience... an almost painful regret, but attempting to be disguised as a loving goodbye... So sad to lose another amazing artist too soon.

There are a lot of tags at the end of this kind of music. Stone Temple Pilots almost do it too much. As a general rule, this type of music wlll be slower tempo than most rock or metal songs. Which kind of lends the distorted guitars with their long held out lines to feel like sludge. And if the guitars go a little up tempo then the vocals will tend to slow down and draw out. Again making things sound thick like molasses. Some member in the band is slowing and thickening things up most of the time. Which adds a TON of heartfelt emotion when you do that. And yeah the vowel precision is given way to that emotion as well. So if you do more Grunge music, pull a lyric sheet for the song because it's more about the feeling than the words. This is probably the most emotion in rock. I'm a musician from Seattle and all these grunge bands (though we were never a fan of that marketing word) are peers and friends of mine. So I've got years hearing what makes up what we were in the mid-late 80s into the 90s. Here's a perfect example. This is Loud Love by Soundgarden. A great "Grunge" band. And this is a more pure example of what they really were. Moreso than their hits like Black Hole Sun. That song's cool, but not typical of the style so much. ua-cam.com/video/j0xosEFe8Ik/v-deo.htmlsi=yQv62ofKtjxx19nh
